Stephens, Samuel Barron

Samuel Barron Stephens (d. 1882) was one of ten children born to Julia and Marcus Cicero Stephens (d. 1842), a cashier in the Bank of New Bern. He entered the University in 1828, became a member of the Philanthropic Society, and graduated in 1832. Stephens' father lost all his real and personal property when a security note he had signed on a friend's behalf came due, and the family moved to Florida. Samuel soon followed and established a successful law practice in Quincy, FL. He married a woman named Caroline in the early 1840s; a daughter Fannie was born in 1844. Stephens helped write the constitution for the state of Florida and during the Civil War served as a colonel in a Florida regiment.
